Restoration of the Old County Jail:
The King William County Historical Society is attempting to raise funds which are needed to renovate the historic jail in the old King William Court House complex. The jail was built in 1890. In 1940, it was used for county offices. In the 1980’s the offices were moved to the County’s administration building. The jail building has remained vacant since then.
Recently the County replaced the roof on the jail, but the interior has considerable water damage. The County has indicated the willingness to lease the jail to the Society, if it can raise the funds to repair it.
There are many benefits to the citizens and KWCHS if the jail is repaired:
The KWCHS would utilize one room for the storage of artifacts, which are now stored in the basement of the museum.
A second room would be used as an historic library and research room.
The third room would be a meeting room for KWCHs and a jury room when court is held in the old court house.
Two handicapped bathrooms would be built at the jail. They would be used by KWCHS and the public when events are held at the complex.
With the renovation of the jail, the historic 1725complex will again be fully utilized and enjoyed by the citizens.
The cost of the renovations is about $35,000. Although the KWCHS is seeking some grant funding, private matching funds are essential.
Tax exempt contributions can be sent to: King William County Historical Society Post Office Box 233 King William, Virginia 23086. Questions can be addressed to KWCHS President, Carl R. Fischer at telephone 804.843.9194.
